Sandy Spit is the small round island with a handful of palm trees that appears on a great many BVI postcards, and it genuinely does look like that. It sits just off Little Jost Van Dyke alongside Green Cay, and the pair make one of the most photogenic stops in the islands.

What to expect on the beach

Sandy Spit itself is a sandbar you can walk around in a few minutes. Landing is easy in calm conditions and the swimming is superb. Green Cay, immediately adjacent, has the better snorkelling — a fringing reef with good coral, reef fish and frequently turtles in the grass beds between the two islands.

Conditions matter more here than at sheltered sites. Both are exposed to north swell, and what is a flat, easy stop in settled weather can be uncomfortable and difficult to land on when there is any north in the forecast.

Getting there on your crewed charter

There are no facilities, no shade to speak of and nothing to buy, so bring water. Most crews visit as a morning stop before moving on to Great Harbour or White Bay.
